Mind your step…traversing the potholes of life

An autobiography in five short chapters by Portia Nelson

  1. I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
   I fall in.
   I am lost… I am hopeless.
   It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

2. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
   I pretend I don’t see it.
   I fall in again.
I can’t believe I’m in the same place.
   But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

3. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
   I see it is there.
   I still fall in… it’s a habit.
   My eyes are open.
   I know where I am.
   It is my fault.
   I get out immediately.

4. I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
   I walk around it.

5. I walk down another street.

OK seekers of authenticity, an invitation to cozy up with your journal and reflect on the following:

What ‘holes’ do you keep finding yourself in?

What patterns can you map in your life in regard to these ‘holes’?

Notice any triggers?

Which of the above chapters speaks to you about your current relationship with the ‘hole’?

What internal and external resources might be helpful in supporting you in the next chapter of your journey?

What wisdom can your body share to help you become aware of these holes so to avoid them in the future? Sensations? Tightenings? Gut feelings?

There is much value in pondering the patterns of your life.

Keep a sense of curiosity and compassion as your explore your inner world.

Don’t be tempted to judge and criticise the ‘mistakes’ you have made. Each has been an opportunity to learn more about yourself and the world around you.

Celebrate yourself for ‘holes’ that you no longer fall into.

As always…nurture yourself as you would nurture a precious child, for you are a beloved child of the Divine.

Onward and upward, backwards and beyond, loving you and your zigzaggin’ journey,
